A three unit apartment complex on Debby Street in Columbus was damaged by fire after flames ignited in one of the units Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters responding to the 7:41 p.m. fire found the first and second floors on the front side of the apartment in flames. It took firefighters about 20 to 25 minutes to get the fire under control, said Battalion Chief Donnie Jones.

Two other apartments in the complex had smoke and water damage. Occupants in those apartments were forced out of their homes Thursday night because of the damage.

About 19 firefighters including a fire investigator were on the scene of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
