High school roundup: Northside sweeps Lee County in shutouts


The Northside High baseball team made the most of two runs, one each in two games, to sweep a doubleheader against Lee County on Thursday at home.

In the opener, the Patriots got a sacrifice fly from Victor Ballesteros in the third inning to support Gavin Bedsole's complete-game, 1-0 shutout. Bedsole went seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out six without a walk.

In Game 2, Northside again got its run in the third inning, this time on a passed ball that brought in R.J. Brown. This shutout was completed by three pitchers for the Patriots. Jalen Latta started the game, went four innings and allowed two hits, Sam Kyte went 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, and Cole Hill recorded the final out of the game to earn the save.Thursday at Northside

The Columbus baseball team used an offensive outburst to overcome Alexander 14-9 on Thursday at home.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Lady Red Devils rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, but Columbia of Lake City, Fla,, got walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

The loss dropped Central into the consolation bracket in the Kissimmee Klassic.

Allie Kelley (6-5) took the loss. She pitched well, scattering eight hits and striking out nine batters. Kelley was also 3-4 at the plate with an RBI.Thursday at Kissimmee, Fla.

It scored five in the first half and four in the second, and got a hat trick from Whitley Anderson.
