Police: Athens woman receives heroin-stuffed bear

A "smelly," mysterious teddy bear sent to an Athens, Ga., woman earlier this week turned out to be stuffed with heroin, according to police.

The woman called 911 after receiving an unexpected package from Mexico on Thursday — knowing no one from Mexico, the woman worried it may be dangerous.

The package contained a teddy bear; the bear "had an old smell scent to it, which I thought was odd,” according to the responding officer's report.

"He then noticed a slit in the back of the teddy bear’s neck," according to the Athens Banner-Herald, "and after reaching in pulled out something in green wrapping paper that had plastic wrap and a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement tape around it."

That "something" was a package with black powder, stuffed into the bear; that black powder was heroin, according to an analysis performed a drug task force member, the ABH reported.

An investigation into the bear's intended recipient is ongoing.
