Fireworks ignite American flag at Braves home opener

acarlson@ledger-enquirer.comApril 9, 2014

Tuesday was not a good day for the Braves: the team lost its home opener to the Mets. A large American flag, waving over the stadium, also caught fire.

The night doubled as celebration of the 40th anniversary of Hank Aaron's record-breaking home run. It was a windy evening for a celebratory fireworks display and most flags aren't fire-proof.

Julie Paulk was in attendance that night and caught the inauspicious burning, which quickly spread around the sports blogosphere — including being filed under "TERRORISM" at Deadspin. But the flames looked worse than they were, additional footage from Paulk shows the flag singed but still waving after the fire was extinguished by the same wind which caused it.
