Darrin Adams

Darrin Adams became a Muscogee County inmate after he tried to walk out on a bar tab. Friday, he walked away again — this time while on prison work detail.

The 41 year old escaped from Muscogee County Prison authorities while performing lawn maintenance duties on Woodruff Road at 2 p.m.

"He asked to go to the rest room and never came back," Mayor Teresa Tomlinson said. "But we have a team searching for him, and we're confident he'll be recaptured soon."

Adams, a non-violent minimum security inmate, was arrested in September 2013 when he refused to pay his tab at Spicoli's Bar & Grill. Police found methamphetamine in Adam's possession during a search, according to a report.

Tomlinson said the inmate's local status will make his recapture easier. Citizens should call 911 immediately if Adams is spotted.

"Usually, when they're local like this, they go to an area they know," she said. "Whenever we lose someone like this on detail we're pretty sure of where we might find them. So if they'll just call 911, we can send someone out to that location directly."

Several squads are searching the area surrounding Adams escape, Tomlinson said. Resource officers have also been posted at nearby Fort Middle School for extra security.

Friday was not Adams' first jail break, according to a WRBL report. In December 2013, Adams slipped past Lee County Sheriff's deputies while another inmate was being released. He was arrested after being charged with lying to an officer.
