Tide's Maurice Smith, Reuben Foster hampered by injuries

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama coach Nick Saban said sophomore defensive back Maurice Smith missed Saturday's scrimmage because he had "a little bit of a concussion."

"Maurice missed a couple of days of practice and he didn't actually go today," Saban said. "Got a little bit of a concussion. I think he'll be OK. Probably would have been OK today, but we're being a little cautious with some of those things. I think that's the right thing to do."

As a true freshman, Smith played in 12 games and made one start in 2013. He had 13 tackles and three pass breakups last season.

With Smith sidelined for a few practice, Saban said those reps have mostly gone to freshman Tony Brown and redshirt freshman Anthony Averett.

Other injury news

Saban said sophomore linebacker Reuben Foster "went about half the time today" in the scrimmage. Foster is still battling a neck stinger that has been bothering him all spring. He reaggrevated it during the first scrimmage and had to sit out most of the day.

Other than that, Saban said no other player went down. He said it'll be good for the team to have Sunday and Monday off.

"We're getting dinged up enough that two days rest will do 10 times more good than one day," Saban said. "Maybe we can get a little recovery with some of these guys so they can finish the spring strong and we can make the improvements we would like to make."
