CVCC sweeps doubleheader from Central Alabama

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. -- Hunter Mitchell spread four hits over nine innings in a complete game shutout Saturday as the CVCC Pirates swept a doubleheader from Central Alabama.

Mitchell (6-2) struck out 10 in picking up the 7-0 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader. It was scheduled to go seven innings as the second game, but there was no score through seven. Central Alabama's John Michael Knighton held the Pirates scoreless.

The Pirates (33-8, 13-3 ACCC) struck for seven runs in the top of the ninth and Mitchell closed out Central Alabama.

The Pirates were led by Cam Sperry, who went 2-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead runs in the ninth. John Holland was 2-for-5 with an RBI. James Cunningham was 1-for-4 and drove in a run.

In Game 1, the Pirates jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to see Central Alabama rally and take a 7-6 lead in the sixth inning.

Jake Maziar's 2-run single put CVCC back on top as the Pirates scored three runs in the seventh to take a 9-7 lead. Both teams later added single runs to make the final score 10-8.

Colt Ramsey (1-0) got the win in relief. He allowed one hit in 2 1-3 innings and struck out four.

Maziar was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Jared Martin drove in two runs. Grayson Ivey went 2-for-3 and had an RBI.
