Tim Chitwood: Hide your stuff before the debate

When you're fresh meat, kill, and throw them something fresher: It's Monday Mail.

Card

Today's opening is from character Frank Underwood in the Netflix series "House of Cards."

Broke

Here's a warning from Midland neighborhood watch. It went out Saturday, so the incident was around 4:30 p.m. Friday:

From a neighbor:

About 1630 hrs yesterday, I parked my pickup at the parking area at the north end of the bike/hiking trail at Psalmond Road. At that time I spoke to and assisted a young lady who was removing a bicycle from her SUV preparatory to taking a ride....

I completed my walk returning to the parking area about 1720-1725 hours.

As I approached my pickup, I heard a sound of shattering glass which drew my attention to the broken passenger side window of the SUV....

I am afraid that my instincts and training took over, and I concluded "gunshot, sole target, cannot identify source, exit." I did and when I got home, I immediately called 911 and reported the incident... an apparent case of theft as the young lady's purse and a laptop were removed from the vehicle.... The sound that I heard was the shattered glass falling from the broken window….

Dear neighbor:

We would want to know if someone were shooting at bicyclists. Their neon-bright outfits would make them easy targets.

Like we always say, never leave anything valuable in plain sight in a car.

Press

I wouldn't leave valuables in my car even to visit the library for an hour-long mayoral debate:

The Muscogee County Republican Party proudly announces that we are hosting a Columbus Mayoral Candidates' Debate ... Wednesday … from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Muscogee County Public Library.... This is going to be ... divided into multiple segments.

• Part 1: Opening statements by each candidate.

• Part 2: A panel of four community leaders and representatives will pose two questions to each candidate, alternating.

• Part 3: The candidates will field questions from the audience ... screened by the moderator.

• Part 4: Closing statements.

… Each response can be up to 90 seconds. The opponent will have up to 30 seconds' rebuttal.

The library auditorium has been reserved from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., so the press is invited to come early or stay late for interviews for the candidates….

Sincerely,

The Muscogee County Republican Party Debate Team, moderator: Nic Cols.

Dear Nic:

Don't stay too late. The library closes at 8.
