There will be an awards ceremony and luncheon hosted by Sportsvisions at 11:30 a.m. Friday to honor the Kendrick girls basketball team for their state championship this season.

The luncheon, which will be held at the Gallery at Fountain Park at 1621 Macon Road, will host guest speaker Andy Landers, the legendary women’s basketball coach at the University of Georgia.

Landers is one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history, compiling 905 wins in 39 years, 35 of which came with the Lady Bulldogs. He has won seven SEC titles, four SEC tournament titles and four NCAA coach of the year awards.

His Lady Bulldogs were the national runners-up in 1996.

He will help congratulate a Lady Cherokees team that unseated six-time defending state champion Wesleyan in the Class AA girls basketball championship this season.

Kendrick, led by seniors Kahlia Lawrence and Deja Cheatham, went 29-0 to win its second championship in program history and first since 2008.

Lady Cherokees coach Sterling Hicks has over 350 victories and two state championships in only 14 years as the team’s coach. Fifteen members of this year’s team are honor students.
