The Chattahoochee Valley Community College baseball team is No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll, which was released Tuesday afternoon.

It is the second time in two years that the Pirates have moved to the top of the poll.

"I don't even know what to say," said CVCC coach Adam Thomas, whose team routed Wallace State-Selma 14-2 on Tuesday afternoon in a game shortened to seven innings due to the mercy rule.

"I am humbled. I am happy that the players get to experience this.

"I am happy for the school and the program.

"When the kids saw the poll before today's game, it was like kids on Christmas morning.

"I just hope we can finish strong."

The Pirates are 34-8 overall and 14-3 in the Alabama Community College Conference after Tuesday's win.

The victory makes the Pirates 15-1 since March 15.

The Pirates moved up to No. 1 early last season mainly due to a 16-0 start to the season.

In Tuesday's game at Selma, former Central standout Matt Evenson pitched a complete game, striking out eight while allowing one earned run on four hits.

Trevor Kieboom led the Pirates at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs.

Cam Sperry went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. JD Perry also had three hits and an RBI. CVCC finished with 16 hits.

The Pirates host Southern Union for a single game Friday at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

CVCC has eight games after that before the ACCC tournament, which is scheduled for May 11-16 in Ozark.
