AUBURN, Ala. Add another defender to Auburn's long list of injured players.
AuburnSports.com reported Wednesday that sophomore defensive end Carl Lawson bruised his knee during Tuesday's practice and is expected to be out for several weeks to recover.
When asked about Lawson's status following Thursday's practice, Gus Malzahn offered little insight.
"We don't know at this point," Auburn's coach said.
Lawson's reported injury is the latest blow to the Tigers' defensive ends. LaDarius Owens has missed the entire spring while rehabbing from foot surgery. Elijah Daniel, Keymiya Harrell, Tyler Nero and JaBrian Niles have also sat out at different points this spring due to injuries of their own.
Because of this, defensive tackles Montravius Adams and Gabe Wright have taken numerous reps at end. On Tuesday, defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson confirmed his unit will use the package at some point next season against traditional, run-heavy teams such as Alabama, LSU and Georgia.
Until their defensive ends return to full strength, the Tigers will go with what they have.
"We've mixed and matched," Malzahn said. "(Defensive line) Coach (Rodney) Garner has put some of the inside guys outside. We're trying to get more quality depth out there to use those guys in different situations."
