Searching a gunman in a Dodge Charger led police to a suspected cocaine trafficker Thursday, according to a Columbus Police report.

Police began searching for a black Dodge Charger at about 10:30 p.m., after a witness reported a gunman was driving around firing shots near Belvedere Drive. On the 5700 block, they discovered a man in a Dodge Charger sitting in a driveway.

Torrence Howell, 39, acted erratically when police approached — shifting between reverse and park, fidgeting and at one point attempting to exit the vehicle. Police also noticed the strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle.

Once detained, police found a clear plastic bag. The amount of cocaine Howell is accused of possessing was not available.

Howell was taken to Muscogee County Jail. He faces additional charges for possession of controlled substances and possession of drug related objects.
