Lady Cougars hold off rally for 9-8 win over USC Aiken in PBC tournament


FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Columbus State Lady Cougars took a 9-4 lead into the seventh inning against USC Aiken Friday and stopped a rally one run short of a tie to pick up a 9-8 win in the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament.

Lindsey DeFee hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and the Lady Cougars scored seventh runs in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead.

Suzanne Carney hit a solo home run, Kristen Carr and Morgan Knight hit RBI singles, Taylor Turner hit an RBI double and Kaycee Meeks, Nina Rubio and Carney walked in runs.

USC Aiken scored one in the sixth and four in the seventh, but any further rally was prevented.

Turner (10-11) picked up the win. She pitched two innings and gave up no runs on one hit with three walks.

Columbus State (30-20) will play the winner of the Francis Marion/Armstrong Atlantic quarterfinal Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with the PBC championship game to be played after.

The PBC announced the softball All-Conference team Thursday. CSU's Casey Googe was named to the first team while Carney and Carr were named to the second team.
