Columbus State men's golf team struggles to seventh-place finish; women finish sixth

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- The Columbus State men's golf team had one of its worst rounds of the year on Saturday, shooting a 16-over 304 to finish in a tie for seventh with Georgia Southwestern in the Peach Belt Conference championships.

With the first two rounds of the tournament washed out by rain on Friday, the event was reduced to just one round.

USC Aiken won the championship with a 3-over 291. Georgia College finished second with a 293, followed by UNC Pembroke (295), Armstrong Atlantic (296), Clayton Stater (301) and Lander (302). Montevallo (305) finished ninth with North Georgia (306) 10th and Flagler (307) 11th.

Only two other times this season did CSU shoot a higher score. The Cougars shot a 305 in the second round of the Southeastern Collegiate in Valdosta, Ga., and a 311 in the first round of the Bearcat Classic in Ninety Six, S.C.

Bryan Lichimo led the Cougars with a 72 to finish in a tie for seventh. Yannick Gumowski shot a 75 and tied for 17th.

Robert Mize, who won twice during the fall portion of the schedule, had a 77 and tied for 28th.

Cates Culpepper finished with an 80 to tie for 48th. Jack Stumpfig's 82 did not count toward the team's final score. He finished in a tie for 52nd.

Aiken's Brandon Robinson-Thompson won medalist honors with a 4-under 68. He edged Armstrong Atlantic's Shad Tuten by one shot.

The tournament was played on Callaway Gardens' Mountain View Course.

The Cougars will play in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional in Savannah, Ga., May 5-7.

Meanwhile, the women played their one-round tournament on the Lake View Course. The women's first round was also rained out Friday.

The Lady Cougars finished in sixth place by shooting a 321, finishing one shot behind Armstrong Atlantic.

UNC Pembroke won the title with a 306, followed by Montevallo (311), Flagler (313) and Lander (316). North Georgia (344) came in seventh and Young Harris (373) finished eighth.

Courtney Lowery led CSU with a 4-over 75 to tie for fourth. Jodi Henley tied for seventh with a 76. Steph Charteris shot an 82 and tied for 21st. Ciera Bagley tied for 31st with an 88.

Flagler's Joanna Yoo won medalist honors in a three-way playoff with Pembroke's Ashlii Thompson and Laura Bird.
