Columbus State softball loses chance to defend title

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Columbus State didn't get a chance to win its third straight Peach Belt Conference softball tournament.

CSU beat Armstrong Atlantic 8-5 in the semifinals Saturday. The Lady Cougars and North Georgia started the championship game at 10:30 p.m. With the score tied at 1-1 in the second inning, the game was canceled.

As North Georgia was the higher seed — No. 1 to No. 6 for CSU — North Georgia was declared the champion.

Columbus State scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning and then hung on for the win over Armstrong Atlantic.

Lindsey DeFee hit a three-run homer and Morgan Staffins hit a three-run double in the ninth for CSU.

Staffins led the Lady Cougars (31-20) by going 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Former Glenwood standout Ollivia McLemore started for Armstrong and pitched the first 5 2-3 innings. DeFee pitched a complete game for CSU.
