South Carolina squeaks by Auburn for 4-3 win

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn Tigers fell to No. 6 South Carolina 4-3 Sunday. The Gamecocks won the three-game series 2-1.

South Carolina scored two runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the third.

Blake Austin hit an RBI single in the first for Auburn, and Damon Haecker hit an RBI single in the third to narrow the gap to 3-2.

Keegan Thompson tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Gamecocks would score the winning run in the top of the eighth.

Michael O'Neal (Pacelli, CVCC) pitched 5 2-3 innings and gave up one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Trey Cochran-Gill (0-2) absorbed the loss. He gave up one run and two hits with one strikeout in one inning of work.

Auburn (22-19, 7-11 SEC) will host South Alabama Tuesday at 7 p.m.
