Bucharest, Romania (SportsNetwork.com) - Sixth seed Andreas Seppi came up an opening-round loser, while reigning champion Lukas Rosol avoided an upset Tuesday at the $590,000 BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis event.
Argentine Carlos Berlocq ousted the Italian Seppi 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) on the red clay at BNR Arenas.
Another upset came when qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu upended seventh-seeded fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-1.
The Czech Rosol resumed his winning ways in Romania by beating Italian Filippo Volandri 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) on Day 2.
Rosol beat Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in last year's Bucharest finale.
Additional wins came for Romanian favorite and Bucharest resident Victor Hanescu, Romanian wild card Marius Copil, Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, and Dutchman Robin Haase. Hanescu handled Israeli Dudi Sela, 6-3, 6-4.
The 2014 winner here will collect $106,725.
