Marrakech, Morocco (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Daniela Hantuchova was a come-from-behind opening-round winner Tuesday at the $250,000 Marrakech Grand Prix tennis event.
The Slovakian veteran overcame Czech qualifier Renata Voracova 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 on the red clay at the Royal Tennis Club.
Hantuchova's second-round opponent on Wednesday will be last year's Marrakech runner-up Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Meanwhile, upsets came when Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner took out second- seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-2, Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor bounced fourth-seeded Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-2 and Spanish qualifier Beatriz Garcia Vidagany drubbed struggling eighth-seeded defending Marrakech champion Francesca Schiavone, of Italy, 6-3, 6-2. The former French Open titlist Schiavone beat Spain's Dominguez Lino in last year's Marrakech finale.
Additional upsets were avoided when fifth-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza whipped Israeli Julia Glushko 6-2, 6-2 and sixth-seeded Chinese Peng Shuai snuck past Tunisian wild card Ons Jabeur 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Other Day 2 wins came for Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck, Spaniards Estrella Cabeza Candela and qualifier Lara Arruabarrena, Ukrainian qualifier Maryna Zanevska, and Swiss Stefanie Voegele and Romina Oprandi.
The 2014 Marrakech titlist will claim $43,000.
