Our interest in a quarterback's arm strength or his ability to extend a play with his legs is acceptable in a world where a signal caller's score on the Wonderlic Test makes headlines.
But why obsess over a QB and his GF?
It began during the 2013 BCS national championship game when ESPN commentators Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit discussed Katherine Webb, who is dating Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.
Cameras focused on Webb, a pageant contestant who went to Auburn of all places, and Musburger drew heat by calling her a "lovely lady." Critics called his remarks "sexist," and the network apologized.
How stupid was that? The 2007 Northside High School graduate is obviously beautiful but what got the veteran announcer into trouble was what he said to Herbstreit, his sidekick in the booth and a former quarterback at Ohio State University.
"You quarterbacks get all the good-looking women," Musburger noted -- an observation that is confirmed on a regular basis.
Quarterbacks and their ladies keep making news. That includes McCarron and Webb, who recently announced their engagement -- on Twitter, of course.
Check the list:
Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray is dating Kacie McDonnell, a traffic reporter for a Philadelphia TV station. She used to be involved with Minnesota Viking quarterback Christian Ponder, who's now married to a sideline reporter for ESPN.
University of Central Florida star Blake Bortles could be the first quarterback taken in the NFL Draft, but he often takes a backseat to his girlfriend Lindsay Duke, who even impressed his college coach George O'Leary.
"I would hope as a head coach that the numbers would be reversed, but obviously you haven't seen his girlfriend. She deserves six million Googles," O'Leary said.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has announced his engagement to Kelly Hall. He met the bikini model at Georgia where she was a Bulldog cheerleader.
Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel keeps scrambling and avoiding tackles. His list of online girlfriends grows daily. His latest hottie is a bottle service girl at a nightclub (whatever that is.)
Why should we care who a quarterback takes to dinner? Jay Barker played quarterback at Alabama, Kerwin Bell called signals at Florida and Ray Goff was a successful field general at Georgia. We never gave a whit about their girlfriends, and if a writer had filed a story about their dating habits, few sports editors of their eras would have printed the article. But quarterbacks do get the girls. McCarron quarterbacked a national championship team and Webb was Miss Alabama USA.
They've told TMZ Sports that they plan a summer wedding and there is talk their nuptials will be the subject of a reality TV show.
Wonder if Brent Musburger will be the best man?
