Columbus State signs volleyball player Jessi Shapiro

The Columbus State volleyball team announced Thursday the signing of setter Jessi Shapiro.

She is a junior college transfer from Pasco-Hernando Community College in Dade City, Fla.

She finished her sophomore season ranked 10th in National Junion College Athletic Association Division II in assists with 1,292 (9.5 per set). She had at least 40 assists in 12 matches, including a career-high 53 in a win over Florida College.

Shapiro also had 1.53 digs per game with a career-high 16 in a win over South Florida State.

Pasco-Hernando advanced to the district championship match in both seasons.

"I'm excited to bring Jessi in because, having been a junior college player, she provides experience and leadership," Columbus State coach Casey Cornett said. "She will instantly impact the team in a positive way and help us continue to be successful."

The Lady Cougars went 20-11 last season. It was the first year for the program after having been dormant since 1981.
