Adair Avenue shooting victim dies

A Columbus man who seriously injured by gunfire on Adair Avenue Thursday died Friday at Midtown Medical Center, authorities said.

Corey Owens, 29, was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m. in the intensive care unit of the hospital, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan. He died of a gunshot wound to the head. Owens was shot in the head after a gunman fired shots at the white SUV he was driving on Adair Avenue at Wynnton Road.

Bryan said an autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

The shooting occurred around 1:50 p.m. Thursday in front of Rivers Homes, a small public housing complex. Police sealed off the area while detectives investigated the shooting.

Part of Wynnton Road and Adair Avenue were temporarily blocked while police seized the victim’s SUV as part of the investigation.

The shooting remains under investigation.
