South Carolina pulls away from Alabama in series opener


COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth inning and went on to a 9-3 victory over Alabama on Friday night.

Alabama (28-14, 12-7 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Kyle Overstreet run-scoring single.

The Gamecocks (33-10, 11-8) scored two in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead.

Mikey White homered for the Tide in the third to tie the game.

Gene Cone had a three-run triple in the Gamecocks' fourth inning. Grayson Greiner added a homer in the eighth.

Overstreet also drove in a run in the ninth.

Alabama starter Spencer Turnbull gave up six runs -- four earned -- on six hits and six walks in seven innings. South Carolina's Jordan Montgomery earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits in 6 1-3 innings.

Hunter Webb (Russell County) went 1-for-3 for the Tide.

The two teams play again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
