High school roundup: Brookstone's rally falls short against Schley County

Shaw's Mikel Bartley signed with Point University on Thusrday.

Brookstone had the winning run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Cougars couldn't sustain the rally and fell to Schley County 6-4 on Friday afternoon.

The victory gave Schley County a sweep of Brookstone this season and the Region 4-A championship.

Only the region champions are guaranteed a berth in the Class A state playoffs, but the Cougars were No. 7 in the latest power rankings that were released Tuesday. With the top 16 making the private-school field, the Cougars seem to be a lock for a berth.

Schley County built a 6-0 lead in Friday's game with two runs each in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Meanwhile, Blake Howell had limited the Cougars to just two hits through six.

But the Cougars refused to go quietly.

Guy Peek led off the seventh with a single and James Sherrer walked. Preston Campbell followed with a single to left to score Peek.

Eliot Turner hit a grounder, which was thrown away, allowing Sherrer and Campbell to score. Turner went all the way to third on the play.

Matt Jones then reached on another error, which allowed Turner to score the fourth run.

Chase Patrick was brought in to replace Howell. Patrick hit a batter and walked one to load the bases, but he managed to get the three outs Schley County needed.
