Arnold Middle School wins 2014 reading bowl

April 26, 2014

Arnold Middle School is the winner of the 2014 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is named for a dynamic and innovative library media specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County, Ga. In 1985, Ruffin served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children's Book Award nominee program. The program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia. The literature program inspired her to use the books to encourage students to read. She created a unique reading competition in game format by using the award nominees. Her vision was to have teams comprised of students from different schools compete to test their knowledge of the selected books. The Arnold Middle winners are, from left, Coach Beth Bridges, Ramon Rios, Trey Mobley, Kailen Desaussure, Patrick Chappel, John McCamy, Damario Walden, Tyrian Jilles, Nithiya Jose, Mary Chen and Mattie King. The team advanced to the regionals where they placed 6th out of 13.
