Gimnasia LP goes top in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina ( - Gimnasia LP took over the top spot in Argentina following a 2-0 win at Argentinos Juniors to move two points clear with three matches to play.

Maximiliano Meza got the visitors off to a quick start with a goal inside of three minutes, while Facundo Pereyra added a second goal shortly after halftime.

The home side then had a player sent off four minutes from time as Reinaldo Lenis received a straight red card for a foul on Gimnasia's Javier Mendoza.

River Plate entered the weekend with a one-point lead at the top of the table but the club was held to a 1-1 draw at Olimpo, dropping them back to third place.

Carlos Carbonero scored in the 16th minute to give River the advantage, yet Olimpo equalized just before halftime through Pablo Luguercio to take a share of the spoils.

Godoy Cruz also took advantage of River's stumble as Facundo Castillon's 80th- minute goal was the difference in a 1-0 win at Estudiantes that moves the club into second place on goal difference ahead of River.

Newell's came from a goal down in the second half to notch a 2-1 win over Tigre behind goals from Ezequiel Ponce and Ever Banega, Mauro Zarate scored twice in the first half as Velez Sarsfield downed Rosario Central, 4-1, Colon and Atletico Rafaela finished 1-1 after a 62nd-minute equalizer from Gabriel Graciani for Colon, while Belgrano and San Lorenzo played out a 0-0 draw.

A goal from Gonzalo Rios in the 78th minute handed Quilmes a 1-0 win at Racing, Boca Juniors topped Arsenal, 4-2, and Lanus used a second-half goal from Santiago Silva to secure a 1-0 victory over All Boys.
