Dimple Davis has lost friends and family members to cancer.

It is why for more than 20 years she has participated in the Relay for Life of Russell County. She is the chairperson for this year's American Cancer Society event which begins Friday night.

"Cancer is horrible and we have got to keep working to find ways to defeat it," the Phenix City woman said.

This year, the fund raising event will be on the football field at Phenix City Elementary School on South Railroad Street. It will be 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and participating teams must always have a person walking during that period.

According to the event website, as of Monday, there are 45 teams and 304 participants. Davis said that number is going to grow.

The event raised a bit more than $100,000 last year. The goal for this year is $105,000.

"We will reach it," Davis said.

She has been especially passionate about the cancer fight since her best friend from school, Janice Trammell, died of bone cancer several years ago.

"As children we were like sisters," she said. "We looked alike and even used to dress alike."

Davis said funds from the relay events across the country have played a big part in funding needed cancer research that has already led to successful treatments,

She said the relays also show those with the disease that people care.

Cancer survivors walk the first lap of the event. There is also a caregivers lap in which people who have cared for someone with cancer are honored for their support.

Davis said teams have held fund raising events and may continue to do so after the relay.

"It is awesome to watch how our community comes together for this cause," Davis said.
