High school roundup: Cougars, Lady Blue Devils win state tennis tournament matches

The Brookstone boys tennis team open the Class A private-school state tennis tournament with a 4-0 victory over Eagles Landing Christian Academy.

Playing at No. 2 singles, Baran Baris earned the Cougars' first win with a 6-0, 6-0 pasting of David Han. Hudson Terrell and Trey Thorne secured the second win at No. 1 doubles, beating Shannon Zitz and Jacob King, 6-2, 6-1.

Brookstone's No. 2 doubles team of Jack Pease and Charles Pease clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Matthew Youngblood and Tripp Ausband.

Kazuki Onoe went ahead and completed his No. 1 singles match, beating Ryan Holland 6-1, 6-2.

Jonathan Dreelin was leading Joshua Bailey 6-4, 2-1 at No. 3 singles when that match was pulled.

Brookstone will host either Hebron Christian or North Cobb Christian in the second round. That match must be completed by Saturday.Monday at Brookstone

DANIELSVILLE, Ga. -- The Columbus High boys defense of its Class AAAA state title came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Madison County.

Columbus beat Madison County in last year's state championship match. This year's match came in the second round.

COLUMBUS 3,GRADY 2

The Columbus girls tennis team beat Grady 3-2 in the second round of the GHSA Class AAAA state tournament on Monday at Lakebottom.

Columbus (21-2) advance to the Elite 8 with the win. The Lady Blue Devils will play the Cass-Chamblee winner. That match must be completed by Saturday. If Chamblee wins, Columbus would host. If Cass wins, a coin flip would needed to determine which school would host the quarterfinal match.

Madelyn Boren and Mayu Onoe won singles matches for Columbus. Boren won at No. 1 over Gabby Poux 6-2, 6-0, while Onoe won at No. 3 over Haleigh Caldwell 6-2, 6-2.

Abby Courville and Elizabeth Steelmon won at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-1 over Elizabeth Khayat and Bea Brown.Monday at Lakebottom

BROOKSTONE WINS

James Clark shot an even-par 71 to earn medalist honors and led Brookstone to a win in the Brookstone Invitational.

The Cougars shot an 8-over 292, seven shots better than Westminster.

Clark, who shared Class A Area 1 private school medalist honors with Jack Mize last week, edged Mize by one on Monday.

Brookstone will play in the Class A private-school state championship on May 19 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.Monday at Green Island
