Shaw's Breeanna Mahone finishes second in long jump at state meet

ALBANY, Ga. -- Shaw's Breeanna Mahone finished second in the Class AAAA long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches at the GHSA state track meet on Thursday. Monroe's Jahari Williams won at 18-2. Columbus' Britany Floyd finished seventh at 16-6¼.

Columbus' Brianna Dent finished eighth in the discus at 100-08.

Shaw's Octavia Sims finished fifth in triple jump at 35-07.

Columbus' Hope Skypek finished eighth in the 3,200 in 12:51.79.

In Class AA, Spencer's Miara Elmore came in fourth in the triple jump at 35-06.




The Lady Red Devils stormed past Opelika 16-0 and Auburn 7-1 Thursday to earn a place tonight's 6A Area 5 championship game.

In Game 1, Taylor Corbett went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs and Kaelen Scott drove in four runs gainst Opelika in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

In Game 2, Allie Kelley allowed just two hits in a complete game victory over Auburn. Kelley (15-7) also picked up the win for Game 1. Central's offense was led by Corbett and Ashton Wicker, who each had two hits.

Central's wins Thursday clinched a spot in the South Central Regional in Troy next week.

The Brookstone girls tennis team lost 3-2 to Darlington on Thursday in the second round of the class a private-school state tournament.

The Lady Cougars won both of the doubles matches.

At No. 1, Abby White and Alexandra McCluskey beat Reeves Trivette and Caroline Thoms 6-0,6-3. Abbie Dillon and Abigail Pitts won at No, 2 doubles, beating Jesssica Mauer and Shivani Singh 6-1, 6-0.

Darlington swept the singles matches.

Sarah Cait Hubbard defeated Jessica Lewis 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 Singles. At No. 2 singles, Milan Rane beat Emmie Patton 6-1, 6-0. Emily Thurmond won at no. 3 Singles, 7-5, 6-4 over Rachel Hemmings.


athens Ch. 2, pacelli 1

ATHENS, Ga. -- Athens Christian tied the first-round Class A playoff match with five minutes to go Thursday and then won the match after overtime 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Pacelli had many opportunities against Athens Christian. Luke Dawahare put the Vikings up with a goal in the 25th minute of the first half after receiving a cross from Trevor Dempsey.

Pacelli led the rest of the way until Pete Smith scored the unassisted tying goal with five minutes left.

The Vikings missed a penalty kick and could not take advantage of a 26-15 shots-on-goal margin.

The Vikings finish the seaons 5-12-1.Thursday at Athens, Ga.
