Two months after winning the Class AA state championship in basketball, the Lady Cherokees of Kendrick High School were greeted with screams and applauds from a sparse crowd Saturday morning in Phenix City and downtown Columbus.

“They always do good but the championship came this year,” said Clarence Pitts, a Forrest Park resident whose daughter graduated from the school in 1993. “I pulled for them all season.”

Wearing a gold school T-shirt, Pitts and his wife were among the crowd at the corner of Boradway and 13th Street in Columbus as the school band and players riding in convertibles smiled and waved to onlookers. The team defeated six-time defending champion Wesleyan to finish undefeated at 29-0.

Melissa Henry is happy her daughter has a chance to be part of a winning program in her first year at Kendrick. Kavena Henry, a ninth grader, played guard on the junior varsity team. “I thought it was good they were having a parade,” Henry said.

Jane Bucholtz, a second year teacher at the school, applauded as the team’s star player Kahlia Lawrence and others rode by in convertibles. “I think it’s very exciting,” she said of the parade.
