Columbus State men's tennis team blanks Wingate in Southeast Regional

The sixth-ranked Columbus State men's tennis team rolled to an easy 5-0 victory over Wingate in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday morning at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.

CSU (19-5), which is the No. 2 seed in the regional, will face Peach Belt Conference rival Lander in today's third-round match. The winner will advance to Sweet 16.

CSU got its first win at No. 1 doubles as Marco Almorin and Adi Malicbegovic easily beat Neal Towlson and Sebastian Hall 8-1.

Oussama Zoghlami and Danilo Sardelli won four of the last five games for an 8-5 win over Ryan Forbes and Connor Kudrick at No. 2 doubles.

Maciej Kierkus and Benedikt Wilde almost let the No. 3 doubles match slip away after leading 7-4. Wingate's Filippo Pezzoli and Tyler Schofer rallied to force a tiebreaker. But Kierkus and Wilde won the tiebreaker 7-4 to secure CSU's third win.

Wilde, playing at No. 6 singles, for the team's fourth win, 6-1, 6-2 over Josh Eardley.

Zoghlami clolsed out the match by winning at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 over Neal Towlson.

CSU and Lander shared the PBC regular-season title. Lander beat the Cougars earlier this season. Sunday's match will begin at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Lady Cougars will begin play in their regional on Sunday. They will play seventh-seeded Erskine at 9 a.m. Third-seeded Flagler will play sixth-seeded Georgia College at noon.

The winners meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
