Virginia Tech avoids sweep, beats Georgia Tech


ATLANTA -- Virginia Tech scored four times in the first inning and held on to beat Georgia Tech 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The win allowed the Hokies (18-27-1, 8-19) to avoid being swept by the Jackets (28-20, 14-13).

Daniel Spingola went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs to lead Tech. A.J. Murray also went 3-for-5.

Spingola hit a run-scoring single to pull Tech to within 7-5 in the eighth. BRandon Gold drove in a run in the ninth, but the Jackets couldn't get the tying run.

The Jackets host North Florida at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
