A Columbus man wanted for not registering as a sex offender and other charges was arrested Tuesday after striking three sheriff’s vehicles, authorities said.

Lerodrick Gaines was taken into custody after a crash at Cameo Court and Amber Drive. In addition to failing to register as a sex offender for a statutory rape charge, he faces four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of obstruction, one charge of fleeing and eluding police, two counts of cruelty to children and numerous traffic and marijuana possession charges. He is held in the Muscogee County Jail for a 9 a.m. Thursday hearing in Recorder’s Court.

Gaines attempted to escape from deputies when he was spotted by Muscogee County Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Newton, said Maj. Randy Robertson.

“This was another example of good police work and deputies staying focused on the mission of removing those who choose to endanger the citizens of Columbus from the streets so that our citizens can feel a little safer,” Robertson said in a statement.

Gaines had evaded capture over the last few weeks by refusing to stop for law enforcement vehicles and driving in a reckless manner.
