The Dillingham Street Bridge is getting a face-lift.

But while those steps are being taken, it will be closed starting Monday. City officials hope it will reopen June 10.

On the to-do list is milling, resurfacing and new lane markings across the bridge.

"We have basically seen a deteriorating of the asphalt and the roadway," said Farhad Alifarhani, Columbus' design engineer. "So we're going to provide a smoother ride."

Structurally, they aren't doing anything to the bridge that was built in 1910 by the B.H. Hardaway Co.

According to city statistics, the Dillingham Street Bridge carries only about 4,100 cars a day, according to the city's traffic count map. That's about 6 percent of the downtown traffic between Columbus and Phenix City. The 13th Street Bridge handles about 25,600 cars a day and the Oglethorpe Bridge about 31,400.

The project also will consist of a raised crosswalk at the intersection with Bay Avenue.

"We'll reconstruct the intersection by CSU to have a better passage for the crosswalk," Alifarhani said. A bike lane also will be provided, he said.

Drivers are asked to use the 13th Street Bridge over the course of the four weeks Dillingham is expected to be closed.

Dillingham will be closed most the weekend for RiverFest activities going on in Woodruff Park and on the bridge.
