High school roundup: Central opens regional with split; Shaw's Mustafaa state runner-up

Media, Columbus High would like to announce the signings of two Girls Lacrosse players on Friday, May 9th at 2:00 pm in the Auditorium. Paige Taylor and Kathryn Wood will be signing a Letter of Intent with LaGrange College to play Lacrosse. Any coverage of this event will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

TROY, Ala. -- If Central is going to return to the AHSAA Class 6A state tournament, it will have to do it the hard way.

The Lady Red Devils dropped the opener in the South Central Region on Friday morning, 6-1 to Spain Park.

That loss meant Central would need to win four straight to qualify for the state tournament.

Central got the first one out of the way Friday afternoon, routing Lee-Montgomery, 19-8, in six innings. The game was shortened due to the mercy rule.

Taylor Corbett led the way in the second game, going 4-for-5 and scoring two runs. She also had a pair of hits in the first game.

Ashton Wicker and Kaelen Scott had three hits apiece. Scott had three runs scored and an RBI, while Wicker scored twice and drove in one.

Katie Webb, Kristin Studds and Madison Graham drove in two runs apiece.

Central begins play today at 11:30 a.m. against Wetumpka.Friday at Troy

JEFFERSON, Ga. -- Shaw's Hakeem Mustafaa finished as the state runner-up in the GHSA Class AAAA 3,200-meter run on Friday night.

Mustafaa finished in a time of 9 minutes, 26.55 seconds. Marist's Daniel Navarro won in 9:23.08.

The Raiders' 4x400 relay team (Kalin Cook, Antonio Sarluca, Jordan Gillespie, David Whitehead) qualified for today's finals in a time of 3:23.52.

Cook also qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles in 14.67 and the 300 hurdles in 40.14.

Whitehead qualified for the 400 finals in 49.37.

Northside's Abraham Perez qualified for the Class AAAAA 800 finals in 1:57.37.

Spencer's Eddie Stafford finished second in qualifying for the Class AA 800 in 2:00.34. Chattahoochee County's Christopher Askew qualified for the AA 100 in 10.92.

Chattahoochee County's 4x100 relay team (Delvante Lawrence, Leontae Lockett, Jodie Perkins, Askew) qualified for the finals in 43.36.
