Jonesboro, Ga. -- They've only been playing a Class A public-school tennis championship for two years, but Marion County is already starting to make noises about becoming a dynasty.
The Eagles won their second consecutive boys championship on Saturday at the Clayton County International Park Tennis Center. Marion defeated Trion 3-2 to bring home the second trophy for co-coaches Jill and Judd Peacock.
"We're definitely very happy," Jill Peacock said. "This year we were able to fill all our lines and have alternates, which we weren't able to do last year."
Marion County won the title by using the same formula: domination in the singles matches.
Gray Wells beat Trion's Alec Jerauld 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Daniel Peacock defeated Isaac Thomas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Bense Medders defeated Zachary Mildren 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
"Our singles have been our strength all year," Jill Peacock said.
Trion won both doubles matches. Casey Tudor and Payton Payne defeated Marion's Kendrick Baker and Joe Pollock 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 and Landon Barrett and Kaleb Stone defeated Joseph Long and Skylar McAllister 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
"Our doubles teams played hard," Jill Peacock said.
But in the end Marion's singles were too much and the Eagles were able to walk off the courts with another championship, something that didn't surprise Wells.
"I knew we could do it," said Wells, a junior. "We stuck with it and played the season out. I don't think it's as sweet as the first one, but it's still pretty sweet."
The only player Marion will lose is Peacock, the son of the coaches, who is a senior.
The support for the Marion program was evident by the number of red T-shirts and caps worn by the supporters, who turned the facility into the "Red Zone" on Courts 1-4.
"That's been a key, how the parents have helped and been so supportive," Jill Peacock said. "It's just like tennis or soccer or softball, it takes that little extra if you want to be the best. Our parents did that."
Marion County finished the season 12-2 and won the Area 1 championship. The Eagles beat Mitchell County 5-0 in the opening round and defeated Gordon Lee 3-1 in the quarterfinals. A 3-2 win over Miller County put Marion back in the championship match.
