Central fills out football schedule with team from South Florida

When the Alabama High School Athletic Association delayed a decision on reclassification for the two-year term that starts in the fall, it put football coaches in a bind when it came to scheduling.

Most states were well ahead in the process, and their schools had filled their schedules.

Schools such as Central were put in an even bigger bind when the AHSAA put only seven teams in Class 7A Region 2. That means only six region games -- most schools in Alabama have seven -- leaving four open spots on the schedule to be filled.

Two usual opponents are not on this season's schedule.

The Red Devils will not play cross-county rival Russell County this season. The two teams had played every season since 1998.

Also, the Red Devils will not play its annual preseason scrimmage against Carver. The teams had played the week prior to the beginning of the season for the past several years. Carver will be playing a regular-season game at Carver-Atlanta that weekend on Aug. 23.

Central will also play a regular-season game that weekend, opening on Thursday, Aug. 22, at home against Stockbridge.

The Red Devils will go to Harris County on Aug. 29.

After three straight region games against Auburn, Lee-Montgomery and Prattville, Central will travel to play Opelika, which remained in Class 6A.

After another region game against Smiths Station, Central will host the American Heritage Stallions from Delray Beach, Fla. The Stallions have won three state championships in the past seven seasons, 2007 and '09 in Class 1A and 2011 in Class 3A. The Stallions are a 3A school, which in Florida is a school with 228-636 students.

Central coach Woodrow Lowe said the contract with American Heritage is a one-year contract, and the Red Devils will not be returning the game in 2015.

The Red Devils will close out the regular season with region games against Jeff Davis and Enterprise.
