Roberts walks in winning run as Virgina defeats Georgia Tech 4-3 in 11 innings


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- Entering in the bottom of the 11th inning on Saturday, Jonathan Roberts gave up three walks, the last of which drove in the winning run in Virginia's 4-3 win over Georgia Tech.

Roberts (0-2) retired one batter in picking up the loss. Whit Mayberry (5-1) worked the final three innings in relief for the win.

The teams traded single runs throughout the game. Tech took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth only to have the Cavaliers tie it in the bottom of the eighth. The teams repeated the feat in ninth with Tech going up 3-2 and Virginia sending it to extra innings on an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

Mott Hyde, Thomas Smith and Mitch Earnest each had two hits for the Jackets in the loss.

Virgina (40-9, 20-6 ACC) hosts Georgia Tech (29-22, 14-15) for a noon game Sunday.
