OZARK, Ala. -- Chattahoochee Valley Community College moved to within two wins of capturing the Alabama Community College Conference (Region 22) tournament with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Alabama Southern on Monday afternoon.
The Pirates trailed by three runs heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Jared Martin capped the rally with a bases-loaded double to right center that cleared the bases.
With CVCC down 7-4, JD Perry drew a one-out walk to start the rally. After he stole both second and third, Kendall Ford singled him in. Ford also stole second and third, then Jeff Ronpirin and John Holland drew walks to load the bases.
On Martin's drive, Ford and Ronpirin scored easily. CVCC coach Adam Thomas said he had no intention of
stopping Holland at third.
"With a good relay throw, he is out," Thomas said. "But there was no way I was going to stop him at third."
Martin finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Trevor Kieboom went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Grayson Ivey had a hit and two RBIs.
Colt Ramsey earned the win in relief. Starter Dillon Lee pitched the first seven innings and gave up six runs, only three were earned.
The game was delayed from Sunday night due to rain.
The Pirates (45-9) were scheduled to play again late Monday night. A win in that game against Faulkner State would send the CVCC into Wednesday's championship game. If the Pirates lost that game, they would play Tuesday night.
The winner of the tournament earns a berth in the junior college world series.
