Columbus State set to face USC Aiken in regional opener

FROM STAFF REPORTSMay 14, 2014

GREENWOOD, S.C. -- The Columbus State baseball team will not have to wait long today to try and erase the bad taste left over from its 16-6 loss to Montevallo in last weekend's Peach Belt Conference tournament.

The 10th-ranked Cougars open the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional at 11 a.m. today against PBC rival USC Aiken. The tournament is being hosted by Lander.

The Cougars finished second in the PBC during the regular season. They finished one game behind Lander.

In the single-elimination PBC tournament, CSU made five errors and allowed the Falcons to score eight runs in an inning.

But with four wins in the regional, the Cougars can forget that game and advance to the Division II world series, which will be played in Cary, N.C., later this month.

This is CSU's 24th trip to the NCAA tournament but the first since 2011.

CSU has made seven trips to the world series, the last one in 2007. The Cougars won the world series in 2002.

The Cougars won 2-of-3 games against Aiken this season, winning 4-3 and 3-1 in the first two games of the series. Aiken won the final game 6-1.
