Columbus State women's tennis team advances to NCAA quarterfinals

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Columbus State women's tennis team breezed into the NCAA Division II quarterfinals with a 5-1 victory over Lewis on Wednesday afternoon at Sanlando Park.

The match, which was scheduled for 10:30 a.m., was delayed twice by rain and not finished until late in the afternoon.

The ninth-ranked Lady Cougars (22-4) will play the Hawaii Pacific-Midwestern State winner at 9 a.m. Thursday.

This is CSU's third trip to the quarterfinal round with the first two coming in 2005 and '12.

The Lady Cougars were led by Paola Cigui, who was named the ITA Women's National Senior Player of the Year on Tuesday. Ciqui won both her singles match and her doubles match.

The doubles match came first as she and Camila Tobar routed Zsofia Kranczicki and Megan Nguyen 8-0 for the first win. CSU's Beatriz Leon and Olivera Tadijin won at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, over Jill Wetmore and Kendra Mills.

Lewis picked up the win at No. 2 doubles. Zsofia Lanstiak and Ana Banic beat Laura Chapman and Olivera Jokic 8-5.

The second rain delay came between doubles and the start of singles.

When the players returned, CSU ran off three singles wins to close out the match.

Tadijin won first at No. 6 singles, beating Mills 6-1, 6-2.

Cigui won next at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4 over Kranczicki.

Leon closed out Lewis with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1 over Lanstiak.

CSU was ahead in two of the three matches that were pulled.

The CSU men were scheduled to play its first match against Hawaii Pacific at 4 p.m. Wednesday, but that match was delayed. It was unclear from the NCAA website if that match would be played Wednesday night.
