Buenos Aires, Argentina (SportsNetwork.com) - River Plate secured its 36th league title on Sunday with a 5-0 thrashing of Quilmes to clinch Argentina's Clausura championship.

The title is River Plate's first since 2008, and it completes an impressive turnaround that saw River relegated for the first time in their history in 2011.

Fernando Cavenaghi scored twice for River in Sunday's win, while Gabriel Mercado, Cristian Ledesma and Teofilo Gutierrez also found the net in the emphatic victory.

Cavenaghi opened the scoring with a goal on a close-range rebound, and Mercado made it 2-0 in the 25th minute by heading home Jonathan Maidana's cross.

Ledesma scored on a 30-yard rocket shortly after the hour mark to make it 3-0, while Cavenaghi and Gutierrez both added goals in the final 20 minutes to complete the win.

Boca Juniors ends the season in second place and on a five-game winning streak after a 1-0 victory at Gimnasia LP through a first-half goal from Luciano Acosta.

Estudiantes lost 2-1 at Tigre to finish in third place as goals from Kevin Itabel and Erik Godoy canceled out a 24th-minute opener from Guido Carrillo.

Relegated All Boys closed out its season with a 0-0 draw against Belgrano, Rosario Central topped Argentinos Juniors, 3-2, second-half strikes from Juan Eluchans and Lucas Albertengo helped Atletico Rafaela to a 2-1 win at Arsenal, Colon downed Olimpo, 2-1, Facundo Castillon scored in the 61st minute to lift Godoy Cruz to a 2-1 win over Racing, while Newell's and Lanus played to a 1-1 draw.
