Kerber, Bouchard advance in Germany

Nuremberg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Top-seeded German crowd favorite Angelique Kerber and second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard were among the winners Tuesday at the Nurnberger Cup tennis event, a final clay court French Open tune-up.

The left-handed Kerber was a first-round winner, as she cruised past New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-4, 6-2, while the Canadian Bouchard reached the quarterfinals in Nuremberg with a 6-0, 6-1 pasting of Aussie qualifier Anastasia Rodionova.

Kerber's second-round opponent on Wednesday will be wild card fellow German Anna-Lena Friedsam, while Bouchard's quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

In some other second-round action on Day 3, Shvedova upended sixth-seeded Japanese Kurumi Nara 6-4, 6-2, Czech Karolina Pliskova topped Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and Italian Karin Knapp handled Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-3, 6-3.
