Strasbourg, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Sloane Stephens and defending champion Alize Cornet, of France, came up opening-round losers Tuesday at the Strasbourg International tennis event, a final French Open tune-up.
German Julia Goerges upended the struggling Stephens 6-3, 6-2, while rising Italian Camila Giorgi cut down the second-seeded Cornet 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 on the red clay at Strasbourg Tennis Club.
Cornet beat Czech two-time runner-up Lucie Hradecka in last year's final and was the Strasbourg runner-up in 2012.
In other action involving seeds, No. 4 German Andrea Petkovic handled French wild card Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-4, Croatian qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni took out No. 6 Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 6-0 and No. 7 Chinese Peng Shuai topped Aussie qualifier Ashleigh Barty 7-5, 7-5.
Also on Day 2, Spanish qualifier Silvia Soler-Espinosa beat Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-0, 7-6 (7-5); American Christina McHale drilled Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 6-1, 6-2; Puerto Rican Monica Puig bested Swede Johanna Larsson 7-5, 7-6 (7-5); and American Lauren Davis downed Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova 6-2, 6-4.
The second round will be staged on Wednesday when the 2011 Strasbourg champion Petkovic will face American Vania King and eighth-seeded Alison Riske will battle fellow American Madison Keys.
