A 43-year-old man found with military identification drowned near the Lake Oliver Marina on River Road, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Bryan initially reported the death as self-inflicted, but retracted when officials determined the body would be sent to Atlanta for autopsy. The man's cause of death is under investigation.

A young, engaged couple found the body when they were trying to locate floating plants, the coroner said.

Jimmy Floore and Tammy Bautista said they were walking along the edge of the marina when Tammy noticed a "bald head, an ear and white tennis shoes." They tied a rope around a rock to drag it closer.

The Department of Natural Resources has been contacted. Officials from the Columbus Police Department and Columbus Fire & EMS are on the scene.
