Phenix City Police: Car thief caught after crashing into utility pole

Phenix City police apprehended a suspected car thief Wednesday afternoon after spotting a stolen Columbus vehicle on Broad Street, according to a release.

Officers started chasing the stolen 2005 Toyota Camry around noon, after Columbus police alerted law enforcement that the suspect crossed the Oglethorpe Bridge. The chase ended quickly after 20-year-old Marcus Watkins crashed the Camry into a utility pole on 16th Street, according to the release.

Watkins was located in a wooded area a short distance from the crash. He was charged with bringing stolen property into the state, attempting to elude police, reckless endangerment, no driver's license and leaving the scene of a collision. No injuries were reported.
