Tay Sears (Northside High) will have two opportunities to win NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Sears and three of his Western Kentucky teammates qualified Thursday night in the 4x400-meter relay semifinals with a time of 3:03.94. They had the seventh fastest time.
Sears was joined by Chris Chamness, Emmanuel Dasor and Elvyonn Baily in the relay.
The semifinals consisted of three heats with the top two teams in each heat advancing. The two best times after those six also qualified.
Texas A&M won Heat 1 in
3:00.76, followed by Nebraska in 3:03.61. Western Kentucky finished third and Arkansas was fourth in 3:04.74.
Florida won Heat 2 in 3:04.33, and Baylor was second in 3:05.64. LSU won Heat 3 in 3:03.43, followed by Oregon in 3:03.80.
Western Kentucky and Arkansas had the next best times and also advanced to Saturday's final, which is slated for 6:45 p.m.
Sears, Dasor and Bailey will be joined by Ja'Karyus Redwine in the 4x100 final on Saturday. That race is slated for 5 p.m. They qualified on Wednesday.
Sears was the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year last winter.
Meanwhile, Adam Jones (Columbus High) failed to qualify in the 1,500.
Jones ran his semifinal heat in 3:47.40. He finished with the 18th best time.
Arizona's Lawi Lang finished with the best qualifying time of 3:41.03. The final qualifier finished in 3:46.40.
