Two tractor trailer drivers were critically injured Friday after one of the drivers rammed his 18-wheeler into the back of the first truck, according to an Opelika Police Department press release.

Officers say the 53-year-old driver of the first tractor trailer was stopped at a traffic light near U.S. 280 West and Grand National Parkway when the 60-year-old driver piloting the second tractor trailer rear-ended him. Passengers in at least two nearby cars received minor injuries during the accident.

The driver of the first vehicle was air-lifted to Midtown Medical Center. The second driver, along with the injured occupants of the other cars, were taken to East Alabama Medical Center.

No further details were available. The accident is being investigated by the Opelika Police Department.
