Tay Sears (Northside High) earns two top-5 finishes in NCAA track championships

Tay Sears and his Western Kentucky teammates earned a pair of top-5 finishes in the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Hayward Stadium at Eugene, Ore.

Sears, who is a former Northside High track and field standout, is a freshman at WKU.

Sears, Emmanuel Dasor, Elvyonn Bailey and Chris Chamness finished fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3 minutes, 3.99 seconds.

Texas A&M won the event in 2:59.60, followed by Florida (3:00.42) and LSU (3:01.60). Arizona State came in fifth (3:04.11), followed by Nebraska (3:04.14), Baylor (3:04.89) and Arkansas (3:07.26).

WKU has qualified in Thursday's semifinals with a time 3:03.94.

Sears, Dasor and Bailey were joined by Ja'Karyus Redwine for the 4x100, in which they finished fifth with a time of 39.43. They had qualified in 39.18.

Florida won Saturday with a time of 38.73, followed by Texas A&M (38.84), LSU (38.85) and USC (39.30). Iowa (39.55) finished sixth, and Arizona State (39.73) was seventh. Alabama failed to finish the race.

This caps off an impressive first year for Sears, who earned Sun Belt Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year honors.
