A 25-year-old Phenix City, Ala., man died Sunday morning after he was hit by a car on Highway 165 near Mount Olive Volunteer Fire and Rescue, according to the Russell County Coroner's Office.
Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said Contaves Lamare Smith, a recent Phenix City residence, was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma at Midtown Medical Center around 2:15 a.m.
Phenix City Police Capt. Jim Hart said the collision occurred slightly before midnight Saturday. The Fort Mitchell driver, who showed no signs of excessive speed or intoxication, stayed with the scene until police arrived, officials said.
According to a release, Smith was walking across the four-lane roadway when he was struck by the driver's car, which was northbound in a 55 mile per hour speed zone.
The investigative report will be forwarded to the Russell County District Attorney's Office for presentation to a grand jury, according to the release.
Correction: an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the fatality was caused by a hit-and-run near the Fort Mitchell Fire Department.
