A Columbus police officer was treated at Midtown Medical Center Tuesday morning after he was attacked in his yard in the 200 block of Lee Road 404 in Smiths, Ala.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office didn’t identify the officer but said he was treated by emergency medical personnel before he was taken to the Columbus hospital. He was treated for a knot to the back of his head and a swollen right arm after the 5 a.m. CDT assault.

Officials said the officer was dressed in his uniform and wore a duty belt when he went to his car to retrieve an item. In the yard, the officer heard a male voice asking for help.

As the officer attempted to investigate the cry for help, he was struck in the back of the head with some type of blunt object by another unknown male. Falling to the ground, the officer said two attackers started striking him in his torso and arms before fleeing on foot.

The officer couldn’t give deputies a description of the attackers other than the men wearing dark clothing.

The victim was released from the hospital.

Anyone with information on the case should call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office 334-749-5651 or Lee County Crime Stoppers at 888-522-7847.
